Moving house

I (Andrew) reckon that Mum moved house 14 times since I was born in 1957, possibly 15 as I think there was another house in Shoreham she was only in for a short while.  This equates to nearly one move every 4 years. The pace increased as she got older, moving 3 times in the last 4 years.  I think she actually quite enjoyed it, although she wouldn't have admitted that, insisting there was always a good reason.  Or she got bored living in the same house for too long.  The local estate agents in Newent knew her well.

The moves took her from Sidcup to Orpington in the early days, down to Steyning in 1969, then Shoreham, on to Salisbury (an ill-fated experiment), to Newent in the early 1990s, then back to Worthing in 2016.  One good thing about all these moves is that every time she moved she would have a clear-out of stuff she didn't need.  All her furniture and possessions fitted in a Transit van when she relocated from Newent to Worthing 4 years ago, then after that she got rid of still more stuff to fit the space available.

At least once to my knowledge, back in the 1980s, she decided that she didn't need a solicitor to move house.  Instead she got a book out from the library - 'how to buy and sell a house' or something similar.  (Lawyers fell into the category of people she had a low opinion of - bear in mind that she worked for a solicitor's firm many years ago).  Anyway it all went through OK, although she deigned to use a solicitor at other times, not without making some adverse comment.

So when we say 'she is now at rest', we mean it literally.
