At the age of 60, and about 45 years after her father made her leave school because 'girls don't need educating', Mum studied part-time for a BA degree in Contemporary History at Sussex University.  As far as I know she was the only mature student in her class.  Perhaps she had an advantage, having lived through much of the period they would have been studying?  Certainly she didn't hesitate to make her views known to lecturers! Anyway she was awarded her degree in 1992 - quite an achievement, especially as she probably moved house at least 3 times during that period!
